Substrate Preparation
A properly prepared subsurface is essential for a successful installation. See Techtalk 126 US | CAN for recommendations.
Proper Slope
A minimum 2% slope is recommended for the deck substrate to eliminate ponding water.
Proper Slope

Technical FAQs
Learn more about how Duradek works, where it can be used, and what makes it different from other waterproofing options.
Where can I access Duradek’s BIM and CAD Drawings?
Visit Duradek’s Technical Library for our collection of detail drawings.
What Testing and Approvals does Duradek have?
Duradek Ultra and related vinyl deck membranes are independently tested and evaluated as a waterproof roofing membrane and pedestrian deck surface that meets major North American building codes for durability, fire performance, wind resistance and pedestrian use. They hold ICC-ES Reports, CCMC evaluations, ASTM and CGSB material standard compliance, QAI listings, and regional approvals such as Florida’s product certification.
Does Duradek offer AIA accredited education courses?
Duradek offers several free AIA continuing education courses and webinars designed for architects and AEC professionals and cover practical topics like waterproofing elevated decks and balconies, moisture management, code considerations, and best practices for long-term performance.
See our Continuing Education page to access the courses.
Where can I get a product sample?
Your local authorized Duradek dealer can bring samples when they are visiting your location for the estimate.
Can I use OSB panels instead of plywood as a substrate?
Duradek requires B/C or A/C grade plywood for strength and compatibility. OSB is not recommended.
Is additional underlayment required?
No, unless a Class A fire rating is needed: Joist → ¾” Plywood → ½” Cement Board → Duradek membrane.
How does the membrane handle expansion and contraction?
Proprietary glues allow the membrane to expand and contract with acclimatized plywood. Joints are lightly sanded and filled to accommodate seasonal movement.
Is Duradek suitable for non-walkable roofs?
Yes, it can be installed under tile, pavers, or runners. Large commercial roofs may be better suited to TPO or EPDM.
Is Duradek approved for high-velocity hurricane zones (HVHZ)?
Duradek meets FBC standards but may not meet Miami-Dade/Broward HVHZ assembly-specific requirements.
Are Duradek installers trained?
All authorized Duradek installers are manufacturer-trained to ensure reliable, long-lasting waterproofing.
